About
Like all of you reading this we are motivated by the need to feel connected to our communities and to create a better world for us all to live in. Everyone wants to give and be generous, have fun, learn new things, have a healthy family, and live with integrity and purpose.
We want to see fair social, environmental and animal justice policies and live in a world of realised ideas. We want to have influence and be influenced; we want to love and connect with people and places and live on a safe and stable planet.
What so many of us are now coming to understand is that in order for these motivations to be realized we need to bring together our communities in celebration.
Melbourne New Folk aims to serve as a platform for artists, campaigners and interest groups, businesses, government and social sectors to come together around important issues to design, create and celebrate.
In keeping with our concept, the community structure is based on a series of events with each event being themed to focus on a particular issue that we all face together.
For example one event will bring together a host of community voices around forest issues such as carbon storage, indigenous land rights, manipulation of media, government policy and sustainable industry.
The end goal is that all of these groups can come together as one broad community, incorporating each other’s knowledge and concerns, and creating methods and techniques for us all to function together, so we can celebrate that we are confidently moving forward into a healthy and safe future.
The name New Folk encompasses everything that this community aims to be by taking the idea of folk and giving it relevance to the present.
The traditional meaning of the word folk goes something like this “…the common people of a society considered as the representatives of a traditional way of life, especially as the originators of the customs, beliefs, and arts that make up a distinctive culture.”
